Active studying

I don´t know if “active studying” is actually an existing term, but it is the definitely the best learning technique. For me, active studying is something what makes all learning, amusing and exciting. Human body is very complicated but connected complex. If you learn one thing then other thing starts making a sense because parts of the human body are in the relations. It is a fascinating but also intimidating at the same time.

When, I study, I am trying to put things into relations, visualize it and draw it. It can be time consuming, but I guarantee to you that you will have no amnesia at the test or if you will, you get out of it pretty quickly. The most important thing is that we learn for our future life and job, not only for passing an exam. When you cram all terms and then you are on exam it happens easily that you forget something. But your brain have nothing to hold on because you just learned words. If you studied with drawing, visualizing and relations, you can forget one thing but you get back to it, through realtion with other structures or visualising a picture.

This technique is very helpful if you study biology, anatomy, or even chemistry. I am sure you can use this technique also if you study other field, not only medicine. Here are some tips for active learning:

Drawing

It does not matter if you draw like an artist or 6-years old child. With some practice also yours pictures will get better. You can draw picture and then makes arrows to point on important parts and writes a names. Use a lots of colors and coloring techniques. You know the antistress coloring books? Drawing is kind of anti-stressing what helps you focus more on the studying. If you learn anatomy there is Netter´s Coloring Book which can helps you remember anatomy better.

Visualizing

If you have a visual memory this can be key technique for you. After drawing an image try to remember it. You can try remembering also pictures from books and textbooks. When you are visualising something , you are using other parts of your brain than when you are just learning text. It can helps you remember better and in more details. When, I study an anatomy, I found out that good thing how to rememer origins and insertions of the muscles is to imagine them on yourself.

Relations

 A lots of people that decide to go study a medicine like science. And science is greatly about a logic. My point is that when you study try make logical connections between things you study. You remember, how a proffesor on the exam got from you things you did not know you know about? He was leading you the direction he wanted in order to makes you make good connections between the things and get into the major point.

Stay curious and ask “Why”

I know that a lot of times you can feel overwhelmed with the volume of study materials and stress from exams. Try keep your passion and enjoy learning about a new things. It is new, it is exciting and sometimes intimidating, but stay positive as much as possible. Relax to restore your energy and fast back to the studying. Also you know when you are telling someone something interesting from the medicine or science he/she asks: why? Why is it like that? And sometimes you don´t really know, you learned but you did not think about it more deeply. When you study try to stay curious, why are things like that and studying will stay still interesting.

Repeat like you are teaching someone

When, you are repeating what you learned, try to imagine like you are explaining it to someone. It can helps you to learn it more deeply. You can also imagine that you are talking about it on the exam in front of the professor what can also decrease your stress from the real exam.

Yoga

If you are a student, athlete or you have sedentary job yoga is perfect for you. Actually, I think yoga is good almost for everybody. But, I use notoriously known sentence: consult with your doctor before starting any fitness routine. Yoga is very complex exercise, you work on your balance, flexibility and strength. We can´t fotget the mental aspect of the yoga, because yoga can significantly decrease your stress level (what is especially helpful day before exam).

You can start doing yoga without previous exercise experiences, but it is better to start under a supervision of the instructor in the yoga class. Later, you can continue practice yoga at home with help of some Yoga DVD or Yoga-app. When, I study all day long, sitting in front of the books my back will start hurt and my muscles get very stiff. In order, to prevent these problems, I like to take few pauses between a studying and when I have time do some yoga poses. Only 30 min. a day can have a tremedous impact on your well-being.

Personally, I love yoga app: Daily Yoga, because they offer more than 50 sessions and various programs for different focus (slim down, get stronger, focus on body parts, health sessions…). You can begin with yoga in any age and fitness level. One of the most important things in the yoga is do it for yourself. Don´t compete with your friend who makes more dangerously looking pose, practice in your own tempo and you will see results inside out.

My favorite drinks for study (no coffee!)

I have to dissapoint you, I don´t drink any coffee (only sometimes decaf) and no energy drinks. Why? Because they are not healthy (especially energy drinks are full of sugars) and after fast energy up you fall very fast down. Of course, I have to admit that 2 coffees during a hard day surely don´t kill you. But, I provide to you healthy, tasty and energetic alternatives for your study session, long day in the office, or your all day hiking adventure.

Coconut water

Coconut water is water from young green coconut, and is all favorite drink of Victoria secret models (but only drinking it does not guarantee you theirs bodies). If you don´t live in tropical areas, nowadays you can buy these wellness drink packed in bottles or even in powder form (what is great for traveling, try imagine taking 5 l of coconut water into your luggage). If you are lucky, in some supermarkets you can find young coconut (but this one look white not green) and after opening you can also consume theirs flesh.

Benefits: coconut water is rich in electrolytes like potassium,sodium,calcium and magnesium. This isotonic drink is excellent for hydratation during hot days or during a sport activity. Does not contain any fat and have cooling properties.

Extra tips: You can add juice to coocnut water to create different taste or add carbonated water. Be careful when you choose, some coconut waters tastes too sweet or too salty for some people, it is best to try more types and choose according your taste preference.

Green tea

I like ths green miracle for many reasons. It has countless health benefits and also some coffeine content which I need sometimes to wake up and put my mind to study mode.

Benefits: green tea can improve your blood flow, lower your cholesterol and prevent heart-realted diseases. The very important information for students is that in one Swiss research was shown greater activity in the memory area of brain after regular consumption of the green tea. Green tea is rich in catechins, the antioxidant which can prevent cell damage.

Extra tips: Don´t put boiling water on green tea because it can damge catechins. For more benefits add lemon juice (helps with absorption of catechins) or ginger juice.

Matcha latte

Matcha is a green tea made from ground whole tea leaves. It has a spectrum of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fiber. I like mix matcha with other green goodies like moringa, spirulina and wheatgrass. In order to make them taste better I add warm water and after almond milk. You can also add ice have iced latte. Matcha latte was chosen for one of the trendest food of the year, and it is definitely deserved.

Fruit and Herb infused water

It is extra refreshing in these hot days and it looks super cool (I don´t know if the appearance is good reason but, I like how it looks anyway). Just put handful of raspberries and few leaves of  the mint into the water with few ice cubes. You can choose from different varietes of the fruit and herbs to create new  tasty combination. Don´t forget stay always hydrated.
